Farewell President - Dr. Harold Allen
On Friday afternoon, January 11, 2008, approximately 200 guests filled the Jesus S. and Eugenia A. Leon Guerrero School of Business and Public Administration atrium to bid farewell to Dr. Harold Allen, who retired in his seventh year as president. during the ceremony, faculty, staff, students, and administrators recounted memories of the many successful relationships he forged during his tenure. Dr. Allen's wife, Carin, was also recognized for her role in supporting many UOG events and activities over the years.
Although he serves as the ninth president of the university, from November 2001 to January 2008, his relationship with the institution dates back to the 1950's when he was a student at the Territorial College of Guam. His accomplishments are many as he directly and indirectly influenced the direction of the university and contributed to the growth and development of the institution. Enrollment is at its highest in seven years, as of fall semester 2007; grants and contracts awarded to the institution increased an average of 12% per year since 2001; and the university garnered low-risk auditee status for the first time in the history of the institution in fiscal years 2005 and 2006.
President Allen attributed the success of the University to the cooperative working relationships he developed with the administrators, faculty, staff and students. As Lt. Governor Michael Cruz said, "Today we are honoring a very special son of Guam, a Chamorri." Dr. Allen felt privilege to be able to return home to Guam and the University of Guam, where he began his academic pursuits.
Many of the guest were grateful for his leadership and to have worked with him, as evidenced by the many gifts he received. His friendship, cooperation, vision and mutual respect were some of the words used by faculty and administrators to describe his leadership during the ceremony. Dr. Don Platt, chair of the Faculty Union, wished him well with the words, "May your every golf stroke be a hole-in-one.
God Bless you, Harold and Carin Allen, in all your future endeavors. Biba UOG. Biba Harold Allen.
