JAMES JI DINNER

The University of Guam and the University of Guam Endowment Foundation, Inc., announced that the James and Young Hee Ji Scholarship fund awarded $1,000 scholarships to 10 recipients this year as part of the $500,000 donation by Mr. & Mrs. James and Young Hee Ji for local students. In celebration, Senators, colleagues and many friends attended a dinner and ceremony on Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the Holiday Resort Guam.

James Ji established the James Ji Foundation in 1995, which has awarded numerous students with financial assistance under a scholarship umbrella with the University of Guam and the University of California at Berkley. The Foundation also gives financial assistance for office walk in applications for students wanting to attend the Guam Community College.

The 10 recipients for the scholarships are: Valene Salas, Leanne Obra, Maria Carlos Salas, Cellini Higa, John Francis Saavedra, Danny Simion, Kayle Leon Guerrero, Cody Merfalen, Preston Manglona, Glayzel-Lou Caasi, and Eunice Joy Perez.

James Ji is the largest Korean donor to the University to date. His accomplishments over the past 13 years has shown the importance higher education is and the many lives that he has touched. James spoke of how he came to Guam with a small American dream, Thanks to God and people of Guam, I have been made a part of this island I call home. He looks at his life and his accomplishments like mangos. How mangos take so many years to grow to finally bear fruit; just like his life on Guam and his dream, it took so many years to build and once it did, he did everything possible to give back to the community.

Congratulations to all the 2008 James and Young Hee Ji Scholarship Recipients AND THANK YOU JAMES AND YOUNG HEE JI for making it happen!
