Hafa Adai Alumni and Friends,

Summer is here and the Foundation is hoping everyone is enjoying this wonderful season! We here at the Foundation are excited about the new changes and upcoming events here at the university. A new president, new Foundation Board of Directors, a new graduate program in Clinical Psychology, new partnerships, Foundation 5K Summer Fun Run/Walk and innovative ways to deliver programs are a just a few of the exciting activities happening at the University of Guam.

Dr. Robert A. Underwood’s investiture ceremony, held May 21, began a new era at the University of Guam. Dr. Underwood’s investiture speech, which is available online at www.uog.edu, sets the stage for future endeavors. The 10th president of the University of Guam sees UOG positioned as the natural choice for students seeking to continue their education.

The Foundation welcomes the newly appointed Endowment Foundation Executive Secretary and Board of Directors for 2008-09. They are Dr. Robert Underwood, UOG President; Joseph F. Ada, Former Governor of Guam; David John, President of ASC Trust Corporation; Jose Barcinas, Retired UOG Employee and George Chiu, Executive Vice President of Tan Holdings Corporation.

Faculty members in Psychology developed a new graduate program in Clinical Psychology to fill critical positions in our mental health professions. This program will better prepare Guam’s mental health professionals to meet current as well as future demand for mental health services.

Beginning in June, The School of Education will hold an intensive summer institute for a master’s degree in Counseling, and another summer institute for a Master of Education in Special Education. Again, these programs were designed so that administrators and teachers within the Guam Public School System can enhance their administrative and teaching strategies to improve our public school system’s special education program, as well as fill important counseling positions.

Soon, all the official signatures will be on an agreement between the University of Guam and the University of Iowa allowing for 60 UOG credits to transfer to Iowa’s College of Engineering. Students who wish to pursue their engineering degrees can now spend the first two years at the University of Guam, which will result in significant tuition savings. More information on this partnership will be released soon.

The Foundation will be hosting a 5K Summer Fun Family Run/Walk on June 28, 2008 at the UOG Fieldhouse. Log on to the website at www.uogfoundation.org for showtime and registration costs.

Global research opportunities for University of Guam’s biology majors Julie Anne Duay, Vince Aguon and Jizan Evangelista will also occur this summer as Julie participates in a summer internship in Costa Rica, while Jizan and Vince will spend two months participating in research internships in Ghana. Five other biology majors will participate in summer programs through UOG’s Research Initiatives for Scientific Enhancement program: Sara Namazi, Jenny Duenas and Marilie Quinto are going to the STARS program at UCSD; Marilie received scholarship from the Endocrine Society. Frank Macabenta is going to Rutgers; and Eiffel Manzano (who went to Rutgers last year) is going to the University of Delaware, Newark.

The University of Guam continues to make progress, develop opportunities, and improve our community, but we also rely on your help to ensure this progress continues unimpeded. Please take time to think about how you can help our students and programs thrive. Consider a tax-deductible monetary donation to the University of Guam Endowment Foundation. We have many different programs and ways of giving; one is sure to fit your interest in how to most effectively improve our community. Visit our website at www.uogfoundation.org or call our office at 735-2956/7 to find out more information on how you can help us accomplish the next set of community goals.

Thank you for considering giving to the UOG Endowment Foundation.
Excelsior! With you we can make a “Triton” difference!

PROCEED TO DONATE

Sincerely

Flora Baza-Quan
